Gil arrived in Australia with his family in 1979.He completed his HSC in 1981 and studied accountancy at Charles Sturt University, Bathurst.Driven by his passion for cars, Gil left accountancy after two years to begin an apprenticeship at a local workshop, where he bought his own Allen Engine Analyser Computer and discovered another passion of diagnosing mechanical issue using electronics. He spent Saturdays developing his skills in electronic management systems, reflecting his lifelong commitment to learning and customer service. After his apprenticeship, he worked at Mitsubishi, Porsche and Mercedes dealerships. His qualifications include NSW ACT 3 motor mechanic certification and rare AES international certification. In 1989, Gil bought Safer Brakes, now Gil Auto, at its current address and refurbished it into a six-hoist workshop equipped with modern diagnostic scan tools for most makes and models. As vehicle electronics advanced and manuals fell behind, Gil travelled annually to the USA for specialist training, later taking his staff with him. Before the Prius launched locally, Gil completed advanced USA training and later lectured Strathfield TAFE teachers on Prius technology. With the internet enabling global peer learning, Gil joined IATN, a US-based network with more than 49,000 members worldwide. He was a founding member of AASDN NSW, regularly contributes to The Automotive Technician and has lectured at many annual conferences. Gil also created “Play Day”, bringing TAT lecturers from across Australia to share diagnostic tools and knowledge, a format later adopted by others.
